𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 : 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑
An African tale about ambition, wisdom, and the price of transformation.
Investors, In a certain African village, long before the roads were paved and the nights were illuminated by electricity, there lived a wealthy merchant whose prosperity was the envy of many.
He owned vast farmlands, warehouses filled with merchandise, and caravans that travelled across distant kingdoms. His name was spoken with admiration in the marketplace, and his counsel was sought by kings and ordinary men alike.
Among those who served in his household was a young man named Musonda.
Every morning, Musonda watched his master dress in magnificent robes, receive important visitors, negotiate profitable transactions, and command the respect of influential men.
And every evening, as he retired to his small quarters behind the compound, he whispered the same prayer:
"𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒚, 𝑰 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓."
He imagined himself riding the finest horses, living in a beautiful compound, and having servants attend to his needs.
He desired his master's life.
He admired his master's wealth.
He envied the influence of his master.
But he never studied the wisdom of his master.
Investors, one evening, an Wise Elder arrived at the merchant's compound. Having observed Musonda for several days, the Elder called him aside.
"Young man," he asked, "what do you desire most in life?"
Musonda answered without hesitation.
"I want to become as wealthy and respected as my master."
The old man smiled and asked another question.
"Then tell me, what have you learnt from him?"
Musonda began describing his master's magnificent house, beautiful clothes, vast farmlands, and expensive possessions.🤦🏻♀️
The Elder interrupted him.
"I did not ask what your master owns. I asked what you have learnt from him."
Musonda fell silent. Ba Muso sure!!😀
Then the elder spoke words that would trouble him for many nights:
"𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐭. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬."
Ba Muso lowered his head.🙇🏽♂️😀
The Elder continued:
"Every day, you watch your master count his money, but you have never asked how he multiplies it. You admire his business, but you have never studied how he builds it. You envy his freedom, but you have never understood the discipline that purchased it."
And then came the final words:
"A man may sleep beside a river for twenty years and still die of thirst if he never learns to draw water."
That night, Musonda stopped praying merely to possess what his master possessed.
He began asking to understand what his master understood.
He started learning the language of business, the principles of trade, the management of money, the art of negotiation, and the wisdom of creating value.
Years later, Ba Muso became a prosperous merchant himself.💃🏿
Not because he wished harder.
Not because fortune suddenly smiled upon him.
But because he stopped confusing proximity to success with preparation for success.
And that, my investors, is where our conversation begins.
The marketplace does not reward wishes. It rewards value.
A dream may reveal the future you desire, but knowledge helps you understand how to pursue it.
Ambition may inspire you to begin, but competence determines how effectively you can continue.
And while opportunities may occasionally favour the unprepared, preparation improves your capacity to recognise, maximise, and sustain them.
