Meet Brad Sheaves, Partner at HQB.

A Coffs Harbour local, Brad was raised in the area before moving to Sydney, where he spent five years developing his experience as a Chartered Accountant, particularly in self-managed super funds. He returned home to join HQB in 2016 and became a Partner in 2020.

Brad works closely with business owners, high-net-worth family groups and SMSF trustees on complex taxation matters and practical business and investment structuring.

With more than a decade of experience in self-managed super funds, Brad also has a particular interest in the tax and structuring aspects of small business acquisitions and sales, retirement, estate and succession planning.

His work often brings together tax, commercial and family considerations, particularly where business ownership, investment wealth and succession intersect. He also advises on taxation matters arising from deceased estates and regularly works alongside clients’ legal and financial advisers.

Clients value Brad’s ability to cut through complexity, explain issues in plain English and provide honest, practical guidance about what to do next.
He believes good advice should make decisions clearer—not more complicated.

Need tax and business advice that makes sense? Speak with Brad and the team at HQB.

Payroll is one of those things that looks simple from the outside.

Pay the team. Lodge the reports. Move on.

But for growing businesses, payroll can quickly become one of the biggest areas of complexity. Wages, super, leave, cash flow, salary sacrifice, reporting and compliance all need to work together.

If your payroll process still feels like a patchwork of spreadsheets, manual checks and “we’ll fix it next month,” it might be time for a review.

Because payroll should not be the thing keeping you awake at night.

Talk to HQB about reviewing your payroll systems before they become a bigger headache.

A budget is useful.

But to be truly useful, it needs to be compared with what is actually happening, and on a regular basis.

At this point in the financial year, businesses have enough actual results to start reviewing performance against expectations.

Is revenue tracking as expected?
Are wages or overheads higher than planned?
Are profit margins holding?
Are projects costing more than anticipated?
Is cash flow tighter than forecast?

At HQB, we help businesses prepare practical budgets and cash flow forecasts, as well as showing you how to use and monitor them throughout the year.

This gives you greater visibility, helps identify issues early and supports more confident business decisions.

Your budget should be a living business tool—not a spreadsheet that sits untouched until next June.

Speak with HQB today to get your budget and cash flow forecast working for your business.

Inventory can be sneaky.

It looks like products, parts, materials or stock on shelves.

But really, it is cash sitting quietly in the business.

Too much inventory can tie up working capital. Too little can affect sales and service. Poor stock records can make reporting messy and decision-making harder.

For businesses carrying stock, it is worth asking:

Do we know what we actually have?
Is old stock still moving?
Are margins clear?
Are stock records matching reality?
Is inventory helping the business or holding cash hostage?

Stocktake might not be thrilling, but neither is discovering your numbers were wrong.

Need better visibility over stock, margins or reporting? Speak with HQB.
