A smoothie and a fruit bowl can have the exact same ingredients.

But there's an important difference.

Once you blend the smoothie together, you can't reach in and pull out one strawberry.

With the fruit bowl, every ingredient stays separate.
That's one way to think about the difference between a traditional index fund and direct indexing.

With an index fund, hundreds of companies are packaged together into one investment.

With direct indexing, you can own many of those individual companies separately.

Why does that matter?

Because even when the overall market is doing well, individual stocks can move in different directions.

Having individual ownership may create opportunities to harvest losses in certain positions while remaining invested in similar securities.

Those harvested losses can potentially be used to offset capital gains, and unused losses can carry forward to future tax years.

Same basic ingredients.

Different structure.

And sometimes, how you own something can be just as important as what you own.

Clarity today. Confidence tomorrow.

Two farmers finish the season with the same harvest. One uses everything the season produced. The other enjoys his harvest too, but saves some of his best seed and puts it back into the ground.
At first, the first farmer may actually look better off. He has more to enjoy today, while the second farmer has given something up with very little to show for it. His seed is underground.
But then time passes.
One decision produced something for today. The other created an opportunity for tomorrow.
I think a lot of life works this way. The consequences or fruits of a decision are not always obvious when we make it, and neither are the fruits. Sometimes it takes years before we fully understand what today's choices were actually creating.
That is one of the reasons I believe so much in planning. I like to call it proactively seeking hindsight. Trying to have the conversations today that our future selves may wish we had. Looking honestly at the truth, talking through the options and opportunities in front of us, and then using that perspective to make decisions with foresight.
We will never make every decision perfectly. That's not the goal.
The goal is to spend a little less time in the woulda, coulda, shoulda club.
Finances, careers, sports, relationships, life. The circumstances change, but the principle doesn't.
Seek hindsight before you need it. Use it to create foresight. Then make the best decision you can based on the truth you have today.
