Could you tell me these 5 numbers for your business right now?
1. Revenue - How much is your business actually bringing in? Is it going up, down or flat?
2. Profit - How much of what you sold do you actually get to keep?
3. Cash on hand - What's in your bank account and how long would that last without adding to it?
4. Accounts receivable - How much do people owe you? More sales aren't helpful if you aren't getting paid.
5. Break-even point - How much revenue do you need each month to cover expenses? This is a vital number to know.
You don't need to memorize every number in your financial statements.
But you should have a basic understanding of what's happening with your money—because these numbers can help you spot problems earlier, set better goals, and make better business decisions.
Start simple.
Pick one number you don't know and figure it out this week.
Then move on to the next one.
Knowing your numbers isn't about becoming an accountant.
It's about becoming a more informed business owner.
