Hiring your child on at the Family farm?

If your children help with your farm or business, paying them for legitimate work may provide tax savings for the entire family.

When your business is a sole proprietorship or a partnership owned only by the parents, wages paid to children under age 18 are generally exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes. Wages paid to children under age 21 may also avoid federal unemployment tax.

There can also be income tax benefits. A child with only earned income can generally earn up to the standard deduction ($16,100 in 2026) without paying federal income tax. Meanwhile, the business may deduct those wages as a business expense.

To qualify, the work must be legitimate, the pay should be reasonable, and proper payroll records—including time sheets and a Form W-2—should be maintained.

An added bonus? Earned income allows your child to contribute to a Roth IRA, giving them a head start on long-term, tax-free retirement savings.

We had a great time sponsoring the Dunk & Donuts event at the Fort Madison Municipal Pool, where local families gathered for summer fun.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces—including a few of our own Menke kids enjoying the festivities!

At Menke & Company, our Family First core value means making space for the moments that matter most.

Recently, partner Brad Walker, his wife Maria, and their children, Emily, Jacob, and Nathan, traveled to Australia through Make-A-Wish for their daughter, Emily.

Their once-in-a-lifetime adventure included exploring Sydney, visiting the Blue Mountains, riding the world's steepest incline railway, meeting koalas and kangaroos, touring Taronga Zoo and the iconic Sydney Opera House, and making unforgettable memories together along the way.

While the incredible sights made the trip special, the time spent together as a family is what made it truly meaningful.

We're grateful the Walker family had this opportunity and are proud to be part of a culture that supports our team in putting family first.
