If you inherit an IRA, the rules for taking money out can depend heavily on what type of beneficiary you are.

Generally, beneficiaries fall into three categories:
• Eligible Designated Beneficiary
• Non-Eligible Designated Beneficiary
• Non-Designated Beneficiary

Understanding your status as a beneficiary is an important first step in making sure you don't accidentally miss a required distribution or create an unnecessary tax bill.

Understanding Bull vs. Bear Markets.

Market volatility can be uncomfortable, but it’s important to remember that it’s a normal part of investing.

Understanding the difference between bull and bear markets can help reduce stress and provide perspective when markets fluctuate.

Knowing what to expect can help you stay focused on your long-term financial goals rather than reacting to short-term market movements.

One topic that isn’t discussed nearly enough in retirement planning is the “widow’s penalty.”

When one spouse passes away, the surviving spouse may continue to have a similar level of income, but their tax situation can change dramatically.

Why? Because they may go from filing Married Filing Jointly to Single, which generally means much narrower tax brackets. Add in the potential reduction in Social Security benefits, and the surviving spouse could face a higher tax bill on less income.

That’s why it’s important for married couples to plan not only for retirement, but also for the possibility that one spouse may eventually be filing taxes alone.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) can be one of the most confusing parts of retirement, but they don't have to be.

If you have money in a Traditional IRA, 401(k), or other pre-tax retirement account, it's important to understand:
• When RMDs begin
• How they're calculated
• What happens if you miss one
• How they can impact your taxes in retirement

If you're approaching retirement or already taking distributions, this is information you'll want to know!

What does "Permanent" really mean when it comes to government legislation?

The example we like to talk about with clients is the recent extension of the tax rates originally established under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. While many headlines described the rates as "permanent," the reality is that Congress can change tax laws at any time. Every new administration and Congress has the opportunity to rewrite the rules.

That's why retirement tax planning should always be forward-thinking, not based on the assumption that today's tax environment will last forever.

Did you know inheriting a Roth IRA vs. Traditional IRA can create very different tax consequences?

For most non-spouse beneficiaries, inherited IRAs must be distributed within 10 years.

Traditional IRA → withdrawals may create taxable income.

Roth IRA → withdrawals are generally tax-free.

Distribution timing can make a big difference in long-term planning and the type of account will also play a significant role in the strategy!

Death & Finances!

Not exactly the conversation most families look forward to having around the dinner table—but it may be one of the most important.

Talking about wishes, financial accounts, estate plans, beneficiaries, and where important documents are located can help reduce confusion, stress, and conflict during an already difficult time.

These conversations aren't about expecting the worst. They're about making sure the people you care about are prepared, protected, and supported when they need it most.
