It may feel like a small purchase.

But is it still a small category?

In 2024, the average U.S. household spent $3,945 on food away from home—including restaurant meals, takeout, delivery, and prepared beverages such as coffee purchased from cafés and coffee shops.

That is approximately:

$329 each month
$76 each week
Nearly $4,000 each year

And these purchases have become more expensive over time. According to the USDA, food-away-from-home prices increased nearly 50% between January 2014 and May 2024.

This does not mean eating out—or enjoying your favorite coffee—is wrong.

Dinner with friends may create meaningful memories. A coffee stop may offer a moment to pause. Takeout may make a busy week more manageable.

The goal is not to remove everything you enjoy.

The goal is to understand what your routines cost and decide whether your spending reflects what matters most to you.

Review your last 30 days of transactions. Add up what you spent at restaurants, drive-throughs, coffee shops, and through food-delivery services.

Then separately consider other convenience purchases—such as packaged energy drinks, snacks, and gas-station stops—that may not always appear in the same spending category.

You may be surprised by the total.

Awareness comes before intentional change.
