A close analysis of IRS tax filer data gives a clear picture of how much wealth has shifted into the Valley – and where it's coming from.
Between 2022 and 2023 — the most recent tax data available — 91,952 tax filers moved into Maricopa County with a combined adjusted gross income (AGI) of more than $8.138 billion, while 86,691 moved out of the county, taking over $6.768 billion in AGI with them. That left the Phoenix metro with an AGI gain of more than $1.37 billion from the net increase of 5,261 tax filers who moved in.
The total AGI influx and the final net AGI gain were enough to put the Valley at No. 3 in the nation for both measures. Only Palm Beach and Collier counties in Florida had bigger net gains ($3.17 billion and $2.245 billion, respectively). And only New York and Los Angeles had bigger raw AGI influxes ($11.467 billion and $10.939 billion, respectively), but their AGI outflows were even bigger, given them nation-leading losses in the end.
