No pitch listed on a fastener? Don’t automatically assume the thread spacing is the same across measurement systems. 🔩

Fastener pitch is commonly described as coarse or fine, and when a metric fastener doesn’t indicate a pitch, it is generally classified as coarse.

But “coarse” doesn’t mean exactly the same thing for metric and inch fasteners. For example, an M14-2.0 screw has 2.0 mm between threads, while a comparable 9/16-12 screw has 0.083 inches between threads.

The takeaway? Always check the actual pitch when comparing metric and inch fasteners.

Just because two bolts look alike doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable. 🔩

DIN, ISO, and EN standards can have differences in dimensions that matter when selecting a replacement or equivalent fastener. Fl**ge bolts are a good example: DIN 6921, EN 1665, and ISO 4162 can differ in head dimensions, so they may not be interchangeable for every application.

Knowing the exact standard is an important step when sourcing the right metric fastener.

A moment of silence for DIN 933 and DIN 931… 🪦

Just kidding. Even though these standards were withdrawn in favor of their ISO successors decades ago, DIN 933 and DIN 931 are still very much alive in the metric fastener world. They continue to be requested, manufactured, and used, and they can still cause plenty of confusion when comparing them with their ISO counterparts.

The good news? You only need to remember four sizes: M10, M12, M14, and M22. These are the nominal sizes where the DIN and ISO dimensions differ most noticeably.
