Labor Day is Monday, September 7, and the ACH system will operate on a federal-holiday schedule.

That does not automatically change every payday, but it can shorten the time available to approve payroll and correct missing information.

If your payroll schedule is affected, send hours, employee changes and special payments to your payroll provider early. A holiday weekend is a bad time to discover that someone’s direct deposit information is missing.

A new requirement took effect for Maine employers on July 29.

Employers with 10 or more employees must now include the anticipated pay range in job postings. The law also requires employers to maintain each employee’s position and pay history throughout employment and for three years after separation.

This is more than a recruiting change. Employers should make sure their payroll and HR records can show position changes, wage changes and effective dates when needed.

Does your business have a federal contract or subcontract?

Certain federal contractors must submit their annual VETS-4212 workforce report by September 30, 2026.

The filing includes employee counts, new hires, job categories and protected-veteran information. Payroll records can provide part of the data—but waiting until the deadline to organize it can create unnecessary work.

Coverage depends on the contract, not simply the company’s size, so businesses should verify their requirements with their contracting officer or compliance adviser.
