Another quick life update.

I am going to be honest — never thought I would use the library as much as I do. But I use it every day. It is a good break from the dorm. Somewhere quiet where I can get all my work done and not just sit on my phone.

As I grow into campus life I am finding that the places and people you surround yourself with matter more than anything. Finding a Bible study group. Worship on Thursday nights.

Sometimes a new view is not always a new place. It might just be an idea or an opinion someone gave you.

Those things that seem minor can change your whole perspective. On where you are at in life. In your business. In everything.

One small idea could make you see something monumental completely different. Or notice something you have been overlooking all along.

I have had a few questions over the last few weeks so here are your answers.

Are you going to continue to run Verity while you are in college? Absolutely. The whole reason I am going to college is to grow as an accountant so I can continue to provide the best service possible for my clients. Verity is not a side project. It is my business and I am not going anywhere.

What school are you going to? Augustana University. Number 1 in South Dakota and 6th in the nation for CPA exam pass rates. I chose Augustana because I want to learn from the best so I can bring that back to the people who trust me with their businesses.

Will my books still get done on time? Every single month. Accounts will be reconciled monthly as usual and ready for whatever is coming your way. I have done client books from my office, from my kitchen table, and from my laptop at the ranch. Where I sit does not change how I show up.

Can I still call you when I need something? I highly encourage it. Will I have to call you back after class? Probably. But I will always be here.

Will I get passed off to someone else? No. It is me and me only. When you call Verity you get Huntley. Period.

Let me be honest for a second. Change is one of the hardest things in most peoples lives.

Change can mean a million different things. In my case it is going to college and getting ready for a new chapter of my life. For you it could be anything under the sun. Changing locations. Hiring new employees. Handing your books over to someone else.

So why is change so hard to make in your business?

I think it comes down to trust. Trusting someone else to do as good of a job as you did. Trusting that this decision is not going to backfire and cost you everything you have built.

That is a real fear. And I respect it.

But staying in the same spot because you are afraid to let someone help is not protecting your business. It is holding it back.

The right change with the right person does not cost you what you built. It helps you build more.

Here is what I would go back and tell myself 6 months ago before starting a business.....

The short story — keep on keeping on.

At 18 it takes a second for people to realize you are here to stay. That is not just another idea you will abandon in a couple weeks. You have to be patient build trust with the people around you and eventually they will send people your way.

Also continue to be yourself do not conform to other peoples stereotypes or what they want you to be. It is what makes you and your business unique.

So the long story is be patient, build trust, show people your character, and with time it will come.

Just because you have a QuickBooks subscription does not mean your books are all figured out.

A lot of business owners sign up and think alright I am good to go. But what you may not realize is QuickBooks does not set itself up for your business. It gives you a template that kind of works for everyone. One size fits all.

The problem with one size fits all is it does not fit anyone well. Half the accounts in there you do not need. And the ones you do need are not set up the way your business actually runs. It just makes everything look messy.

Going through and building your own chart of accounts — one that actually matches your operation — that is the first step.

QuickBooks is the tool. Not the solution. The solution is knowing how to use it for YOUR business.

This may look like a pretty good mess. But with one pass of the rake it will all be cleaned up.

That is a lot like life. When you look at something that looks like a big project it might just be an easy fix — if you have the right equipment or the right person to help you.

I am a big fan of sticky notes. This one has been on my monitor for about 4 months now.

It says — 'What is the reason you should do it more than anyone else?'

Here is mine. I want to give people someone they can rely on. I want to be the best at what I do. I may not have 20 years in the industry. But I know I can give you a level of service you will not get anywhere else.

I want to learn your business from the inside out. Not just the numbers. How you run things. Why you do what you do. Because the better I understand your business the better I can actually help you.

I am not doing this because it is a job. I am doing this because I care about the people I work with and the businesses they are building.

That is my reason. What is yours?
