Anthropic filed for its IPO yesterday. Reports put the target valuation at $1.5 to $2 trillion.
Before its first trade, it’s already one of the most valuable companies in the world.
What the S-1 actually shows:
→ $16.3B in revenue for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2B a year earlier
→ An $80.7B net loss, about $72B of it from a fair-value increase in convertible notes and similar instruments. The operating loss was $693M.
→ Share count and price range not yet set
What’s been reported around it:
→ Last private valuation: $965B
→ At $1.5–2T, that’s roughly 46–61x annualized first-half revenue
→ SpaceX went public in June at about $1.77T. OpenAI is reportedly weighing a 2027 IPO.
Twenty-five years ago, companies went public early, while they were still figuring things out. Public investors got in on the climb.
Today, companies stay private far longer and raise enormous sums from sovereign funds, mega venture firms and strategic partners. By the time there’s a ticker symbol, much of the steepest growth may already be behind them.
A principle worth writing down: the size of a valuation tells you how much conviction the market has. It tells you nothing about how much of the outcome is still left to capture.
Here’s why this matters for your retirement plan.
Index funds buy what their index holds. Within weeks of its IPO, SpaceX (SPCX) was added to the Nasdaq-100, the CRSP US Total Market Index and the Russell 1000. It isn’t in the S&P 500, which requires positive earnings. If Anthropic lists, it may follow a similar path.
So depending on the funds in your 401(k), you may end up owning these companies without ever choosing them. That can be perfectly fine. It’s still worth knowing what you own, how much of it is concentrated in a handful of large AI-related names, and whether that fits your timeline.
A simple next step: the next time you log in to your retirement account, look up which index each fund tracks.
