Venmo, PayPal, eBay and Etsy send a Form 1099-K only when you have more than $20,000 in payments and more than 200 transactions in a year. The lower $600 threshold planned for 2026 will not happen.

All business income is still taxable, with or without a form.

Taxpayers 65 and older can claim a new deduction of up to $6,000 per person ($12,000 for a married couple when both qualify) for tax years 2025 through 2028.

It's on top of the regular extra standard deduction for seniors, and you can claim it whether or not you itemize. It phases out above $75,000 of modified AGI for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.

If you filed an extension for your 2025 tax return, the deadline to file is this Thursday, October 15.

An extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any balance due was owed in April, so interest and penalties may be adding up.

⚠️ CYBERSECURITY ALERT ⚠️
I came across an article last night that I wanted to share with everyone.

The FBI is warning about a new phishing tool called "Kali365" that can give hackers access to Microsoft 365 accounts, including Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive. Cybercriminals are using convincing emails and attachments to trick users into granting access to their accounts.

Lately, I've been seeing an increase in emails with PDF attachments claiming:
📄 "You have a refund"
📄 "This invoice needs to be paid immediately"
📄 "Urgent account notification"

Please be cautious before opening attachments or clicking links. If you don't recognize the sender or weren't expecting the email, it's best to:
✅ Do not open the attachment
✅ Do not click links
✅ Report the email as phishing/spam
✅ Delete the message

Taking a few extra seconds to verify an email could help protect your personal and business information.

Please take a moment to read this article:

The FBI warned that a phishing tool can bypass Microsoft 365 passwords, giving attackers access to Teams, Outlook and more. Here's how to protect your account. (AP)

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ
We’ve been made aware of fraudulent IRS CP53E letters being mailed that look very legitimate.

These letters claim there was an issue with your banking information and instruct you to scan a QR code or call a phone number to correct it.

🚫 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗤𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗗𝗘
🚫 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗
These are scams designed to capture your personal and financial information.

If you receive one of these letters:
✔️ Call the IRS directly at 800.829.1040
✔️ Or log in to your official IRS account to verify and update your information safely

When it comes to tax matters, always go directly to the source — not what’s printed on a letter.

If you’re unsure, feel free to contact our office and we’ll help you verify.

💼 DELANEY & CO. UPDATE

WHO REALLY PAYS FEDERAL INCOME TAXES?
Some perspective worth sharing

I came across a recent report using IRS data from 2023 that I think a lot of folks will find interesting and maybe even surprising.

There’s often a perception that higher-income earners aren’t paying their fair share. But the data tells a different story:

▪️ The top 1% of taxpayers paid an average federal income tax rate of 26.3%
▪️ The bottom half paid an average rate of 3.7%
▪️ The top 1% paid nearly as much in total income taxes as the bottom 95% combined
▪️ In fact, half of all taxpayers paid 97% of federal income taxes

The U.S. tax system is designed to be progressive and these numbers show that higher earners are contributing a significantly larger share.

It’s always good to step back and look at the actual data, especially when there’s so much noise around tax policy.

The overall U.S. tax and transfer system is overwhelmingly progressive, and understanding the extent—and source—of that progressivity is essential for lawmakers considering the trade-offs associated with each tax policy decision.
