Some of you all like to play all day in the IRS' face. I will not be playing with you.
What is a CP2000?
This notice is NOT a bill.
It's the IRS giving you a heads up that there are discrepancies between what you filed and what third parties turned in.
This could be a missing W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-DIV, etc.
Some people get them because they inflate deductions and credits that they aren't entitled to. Of course...that's not anyone reading this today.
The IRS will make a proposal for changes.
Your options are:
1 - Agree, check the box, sign and return.
2 - Disagree, check the box, sign and support your decision
3 - Hire someone to guide or represent you
4 - For the people who have committed fraud but aren't reading this...come clean.
If your underreporting results in a tax increase of 20% you, the taxpayer, will be hit with an accuracy-related penalty as well.
Please choose wisely when preparing or choosing a preparer so that your return does not have deductions and credits you are not entitled to on your return. That is tax fraud.
I'll break down the CP2000 and your options more tomorrow in Episode 78 of the Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens podcast.
