That’s the real haunted house.

And most owners are living in it without realizing.

Good news: it’s the one fear I can take off your plate.

No numbers too messy, too scary, or too far gone.

“What’s the scariest thing you see business owners do with their S-corp?”

Halloween-appropriate question, so here’s my honest answer: Paying themselves nothing - or a “salary” so low the IRS raises an eyebrow.

If you run an S-corp and take all your money as distributions to dodge payroll tax, that has a name: unreasonable compensation.

The IRS has a term for it, which means they’re watching for it.

It’s one of the most common S-corp mistakes I see.

And it’s quiet - right up until it isn’t.

A reasonable salary isn’t a guess.

It’s a number you can defend.

If yours is a guess, let’s fix it before it becomes a story you’re telling an auditor.

It’s almost Halloween, so let’s talk about real fear.

Not the IRS.

Not an audit.

The number you already know is bad and have been refusing to look at.

The bank balance you check with one eye closed.

The invoice you haven’t sent, because then you’d have to admit how long it’s been.

The books you “meant to get to.”

Avoiding a number doesn’t make it smaller.

It just makes it scarier in the dark.

Turn the light on.

Whatever it is, it’s more fixable than the version you’ve built up in your head.

That’s the whole reason I exist.

No judgment.

Just the light switch.

Every set of messy books has skeletons.

The uncategorized pile.

The “ask my accountant” account nobody ever asks about.

The month the bank feed quietly gave up.

Here’s what nobody tells you: it’s normal.

It’s also completely fixable.

I don’t judge messy books.

I untangle them.

Calmly.

It’s the part of the job I actually like.

“It’s only October - isn’t it too early to think about year-end?”

This is my favorite kind of wrong.

October is exactly when year-end tax moves are still on the table.

By late December, most of the good options have already closed.

Retirement contributions, equipment timing, entity decisions, catching your books up before the rush - all of it is easier now, with two months of runway, than in a panic on December 30th.

Year-end planning done in October is strategy.

Year-end planning done on New Year’s Eve is a prayer.

A profit & loss statement is supposed to tell you a story: what came in, what went out, what’s actually yours.

Most owners open theirs and see a wall of numbers that means nothing.

That’s not a you problem.

That’s a formatting problem - and a “nobody ever explained it” problem.

Your numbers should be readable.

Plain language.

No accounting degree required.

When I hand you a P&L, I hand you what it means, too.

Because a report you can’t read isn’t a report.

It’s decoration.

If yours reads like a foreign language, let’s fix that.

“What actually happens if I miss the October 15 deadline?”

Nothing dramatic on the 16th.

Nobody knocks on your door.

Here’s what actually happens:

The failure-to-file penalty kicks in - and it’s bigger than the failure-to-pay one.

That’s the part that surprises people.

It stacks month over month.

Interest keeps running on anything you owe.

The longer it sits, the more it costs, and the harder it is to untangle later.

Missing it isn’t the end of the world.

But it isn’t free, and it won’t fix itself.

Deadline’s tomorrow.

If you know you’re going to miss it - talk to me today, not next week.
