As a professional bookkeeper for interior designers, I'm a little biased when it comes to whether you should DIY your bookkeeping... BUT I know you've probably considered it!

Here are my honest pros & cons when it comes to tackling your own bookkeeping. ⤵️

PROS

✅ Save on monthly fees
✅ Hands-on involvement in your finances
✅ You already have an innate understanding of your own business
✅ No wait times in communicating with your bookkeeper

CONS

🚫 Can make costly errors
🚫 Takes away time you could have spent running your design business (or taking time off!)
🚫 You can fall behind on regular reconciling (or sales tax filings YIKES!)
🚫 Learning curves for software can be steep

I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but if you haven't RAISED your prices in a few years, you've effectively given yourself a pay cut.

Trust me, I recognize firsthand how tough it can be to raise your prices!

You're probably feeling nervous about pushback from existing customers and whether higher prices will make new clients hesitate to buy from you. 😅

BUT, you really need to charge your worth! The cost of living has increased significantly over the past few years. At the very least, you should factor a COL adjustment into your prices.

Have you added more value over the years? Then you DEFINITELY need to reevaluate your pricing strategy.

It may be tough now, but your interior design business will thank you in the long run!

*If you incur an indirect expense that applies to your whole house, you are only eligible to deduct the business use portion.

To calculate your business use portion, take the square footage of your qualifying home office and divide it by the square footage of your whole home. 🏡
