Schedule C Business Owners, Pay Attention

SOLE PROPRIETORS & SINGLE-MEMBER LLC OWNERS: This one's for you. 📣

When you operate a business reported on Schedule C, understanding the difference between gross receipts and net profit is essential.

Generally, Schedule C begins with the income generated by the business and accounts for allowable business expenses to determine net profit or loss.

That net profit can affect:

➡️ Federal income tax
➡️ Self-employment tax
➡️ Estimated tax requirements
➡️ Other items on your individual return

This is especially important for:

🚗 Rideshare drivers
📦 Delivery professionals
🚚 Independent contractors
💇🏾‍♀️ Beauty professionals
🧑🏾‍💻 Consultants
🏠 Service-based businesses
📱 Freelancers

If you're self-employed, tax planning shouldn't begin when your tax return is being prepared.

By then, we're documenting history.

Planning happens while you still have time to make informed decisions.

Professional Disclaimer: This post contains general educational information and is not individualized tax, legal, accounting, financial, or investment advice. Schedule C and self-employment tax treatment depend upon the taxpayer's specific facts and applicable law. Examples and statements are not guarantees of deductions, tax savings, refunds, or other outcomes. Consult a qualified professional regarding your circumstances.

Not Every Expense Is a Deduction

WAIT! Before you call it a “business write-off”… 🛑

Spending money through your business account does not automatically make the purchase tax-deductible.

For federal income-tax purposes, a business expense generally must satisfy applicable tax rules, including whether it is ordinary and necessary in carrying on the trade or business.

That means:

❌ Personal shopping doesn't magically become deductible because you used the business debit card.

❌ Calling dinner a “business meeting” doesn't automatically make the entire expense deductible.

❌ Putting your business name on a receipt doesn't rewrite the Internal Revenue Code.

Proper tax planning isn't about finding creative ways to call everything a deduction.

It's about identifying the deductions you're legally entitled to claim and maintaining documentation to substantiate them.

The goal isn't an aggressive return.
The goal is an and return.

That's professional tax preparation.

Professional Disclaimer: This information is general in nature and is not individualized tax, legal, accounting, financial, or investment advice. Whether an expenditure is deductible and the amount allowed depend on applicable law and the taxpayer's specific circumstances and documentation. Nothing in this post guarantees eligibility for a deduction, tax savings, refund, or particular IRS treatment.

“I Made $80,000!”

Business owner: “I made $80,000 last year!”

Tax professional: “Wonderful. Was that revenue or profit?”

There is a BIG difference.

If customers paid your business $80,000, that generally represents gross receipts/revenue.

But what did it cost you to operate the business?

➡️Advertising.
➡️Supplies.
➡️Business insurance.
➡️Professional fees.
➡️Software.
➡️Certain vehicle expenses.
➡️Office expenses.
➡️Other qualifying business costs.

After properly accounting for IRS-allowable business expenses, you arrive at something much closer to the number tax professionals really need to discuss:

NET PROFIT.

Business owners, stop measuring the health of your company by deposits alone.

🎯Your bank account tells you what came in and went out.

🎯Your financial records help tell you what actually happened.

🎯And your tax return has rules of its own. 📚

THE CERTIFICATE MAY SHOW COMPLETION.
IT DOESN’T SHOW THE HOURS BEHIND IT. 📚💼

1 DOWN. 9 TO GO. 🎯

Today, I’m celebrating the completion of The Tax Advisory Reality Check Challenge through Tax Divas Virtual Tax Academy —one of the professional tax education and continuing-education trainings I have committed myself to completing.

But this post isn’t really about another certificate.

It’s about what the certificate represents.

It represents the hours spent studying when I could have been resting.

It represents reviewing tax concepts, challenging what I already know, strengthening my knowledge, and staying informed in an industry where “I think” is never good enough when someone’s finances and business are sitting across the desk from you.

It represents my commitment to remaining educated, prepared, ethical, and compliant as a tax professional and business owner.

Because here’s something I believe deeply:

⚡️You cannot responsibly lead people where you refuse to remain a student yourself.

⚡️Tax laws change.

⚡️IRS procedures and guidance change.

⚡️Business compliance requirements evolve.

⚡️And the needs of today’s entrepreneurs are becoming increasingly complex.

So while experience matters, experience without continued education can become outdated experience.

🧨That’s why I train.

🧨That’s why I study.

🧨That’s why I invest the hours and finances.

🔥That’s why I’m completing 10 professional development, and continuing-education trainings as part of my commitment to sharpening my expertise.

Not because someone is standing over me telling me to learn.

Because the people who trust me with their businesses, financial information, tax returns, and professional development deserve a tax professional who takes that responsibility seriously.

At TCJ Tax Services & Business Solutions , compliance isn’t something we start thinking about when tax season arrives.

🔐We educate.

🔐We document.

🔐We prepare.

🔐We stay informed.

🔐And when we don’t know something, we have a network with collectively over 45 years of experience in the industry that research before we advise.

That is the difference between simply providing a service and accepting the responsibility of professional leadership.

So yes, I’m proud of this certificate. 💚

But I’m even more proud of the discipline behind it.

Training #1: COMPLETE. ✅
Nine more to go.

And every hour and financial resource invested in becoming better equipped is another hour invested in the individuals, entrepreneurs, and tax professionals I have the privilege to serve.

I’m not interested in being the loudest voice in this industry.

I’m committed to becoming one of the most educated, prepared, trusted, and responsible voices in the room.

Because authority isn’t something you put in a bio.

Authority is demonstrated through education, integrity, consistency, compliance, experience, and the willingness to keep learning.

And I’m just getting started. 🎯🔥

🚨 **Don't Ignore Mail from the IRS! It Could Protect Your Identity—and Your Tax Refund.** 🚨

Every year, identity thieves attempt to file fraudulent tax returns using stolen personal information. The IRS is working hard to stop them, but taxpayers play a critical role in protecting themselves.

📊 **As of February 26, 2026**, the IRS identified approximately **19,000 identity theft tax returns**, preventing the issuance of an estimated **$135 million** in fraudulent refunds. The IRS also continues to protect taxpayers by issuing **Identity Protection PINs (IP PINs)** to eligible individuals.

📬 **If you receive a letter from the IRS regarding your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), don't ignore it!**

Here's what you should do:

✅ Read every IRS notice carefully.
✅ Retrieve and securely store your IP PIN.
✅ Create or log into your IRS online account using **ID.me** so you can access your tax information anytime.
✅ Keep your IRS account information current, including your mailing address and contact information.

**Why does this matter?**

Your six-digit IP PIN is an extra layer of security that helps prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security Number. If you're required to use an IP PIN and don't have it when it's time to file, your tax return may be delayed or rejected until your identity can be verified.

💡 **Don't wait until tax season to find your PIN.** Taking a few minutes now can save you weeks of delays later.

At **TCJ**, we believe that informed taxpayers make empowered financial decisions. Our goal isn't just to prepare your taxes—it's to help protect your identity and keep your filing experience as smooth as possible.

Have questions about your IP PIN or your IRS online account? Reach out today. We're here to help!

**Where Strategy Meets Refunds.**

ID.me Wallet simplifies how individuals discover and access benefits and services through a single login and verified identity.
