If you have not done so, a good idea is to set up an online account with the IRS. Here is more information on how and why:

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/create-an-irs-individual-online-account-today-for-security-and-convenience

This helps when you want to make a payment, look at notices, double check estimated tax payments or even get tax transcripts (think FAFSA).

There is a new form for 2025, the 1099-DA. This is for those who sold or disposed of digital assets using a broker (Coinbase, Gecko, Uphold, etc). Digital assets can include Bitcoin, ETH, other cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, NFTs.

Brokers must send out the form by Feb 17th. Many statements will NOT include basis amounts so be sure to have good records so accurate calculations can be made to determine gain or loss.

There is a question about digital assets on the tax return and the organizers I sent out. To help know how to answer the question here is a tool from the IRS:

Determine how to answer the digital asset question
