Hamrick's Bookkeeping LLC Messy books? Missing transactions? I help small business owners get organized, stay stress-free, and actually understand their numbers.

It's been a little while since I've checked in here, so I thought it was a good time to reintroduce myself and share a little about what I'm working toward! 😊

I'm Kelly, the owner of Hamrick's Bookkeeping LLC. I help small business owners make sense of their finances through bookkeeping and financial reporting.

But here's what I really believe: Your numbers should help you make decisions, not just record what already happened.

Bookkeeping is about more than keeping transactions organized. It's about having reliable information to help you understand your business.

Are your expenses increasing? Is your revenue growing? Does your cash flow match what you expected? Are there patterns in your business that you haven't noticed yet?

Your financial reports can help you start answering those questions.

I'm especially passionate about helping healthcare and wellness businesses understand their financial picture, but I enjoy helping small business owners across different industries, too.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing practical tips, financial insights, and ways to get more value out of your bookkeeping.

Because you work hard to build your business, and I believe you deserve to understand the numbers behind it. 💚

Business owners, I'd love to hear from you! What's one thing about your business finances you wish you understood better?

💡 Bookkeeping Tip: Reconcile Your Accounts Monthly!

Want to make year-end bookkeeping a little less stressful? Start with one simple habit: reconcile your bank and credit card accounts every month!

Reconciling is a great way to catch small issues before they turn into bigger headaches at the end of the year.

📌 How to do it in QuickBooks Online:

Go to Accounting → Reconcile.

Choose the bank or credit card account you want to reconcile.

Pull up your monthly statement and enter the statement ending date and balance.

Compare the transactions in QuickBooks with the transactions on your statement, checking them off as you go.

Look for anything that doesn't match, duplicate transactions, or transactions that may be missing.

When you're finished, the difference should be $0.00.

✨ Why does this matter? Reconciling monthly helps you catch duplicate entries, missing transactions, and other discrepancies while they're still easy to investigate. It's much easier to fix one month's issues than to untangle an entire year at once!

💬 Question for you: Do you reconcile your accounts every month, or does it tend to get pushed to the end of the year?

🎯 What Can You Still Accomplish This Year?

One thing I've noticed about business owners...

We're really good at setting goals in January.

By October, we're often just trying to keep up. 😅

Life happens.
Business changes.
Unexpected opportunities come along.
Plans shift.

And that's okay.

That's why I don't think October needs to be all about looking back at what you didn't accomplish.

Instead, ask yourself:

“What can I still accomplish before this year is over?”

You still have three months.

Three months can be enough time to make meaningful progress when you know where to focus.

And sometimes, the first step is simply understanding where your business stands today.

That's one of my favorite parts of bookkeeping—not just creating a report, but helping business owners turn their numbers into a plan for what comes next. 📊

You don't have to finish the year exactly where you started it.

🩺 Financial Vital Sign: Are You On Track?

October is a great time to pause and take a look at where your business is headed.

Ask yourself:

“If nothing changed between now and December 31, would I be happy with where my business ends the year?”

If the answer is no, that's okay.

There are still three months left in the year, and that's enough time to make meaningful changes.

📋 Your October Financial Check-Up

Pull up your year-to-date Profit & Loss and ask yourself:

✔️ Am I on track to reach my goals?
✔️ What's one area I'd like to improve before the end of the year?
✔️ What's one action I can take this month to move closer to that goal?

You don't have to change everything.

Sometimes, one intentional improvement can make a difference when you give it time to work.

🏁 Finish Strong Tip: Don't wait until January to make changes. You still have time to influence how your year ends.

🩺 Healthy Practice Principle: Your numbers shouldn't just tell you what happened. They should help you decide what to do next.

📊 Your Financial Reports Aren’t There to Judge Your Business

If there's one thing I hope business owners take away from my posts, it's this:

Your financial reports aren't there to judge your business. They're there to help you understand it.

Every business has ups and downs.

Some months are great.
Some months are slower.
Unexpected expenses happen.
Revenue can change.

That's normal.

The value isn't in having “perfect” numbers.

The value is in understanding what your numbers are telling you so you can make your next decision with more confidence.

Maybe your expenses have increased.
Maybe your revenue is growing.
Maybe your cash flow needs some attention.
Maybe you're doing better than you realized.

Your books can help you see what's really happening in your business.

And that's why I enjoy bookkeeping.

Not just because I love spreadsheets (although I really do 😊).

I love helping business owners replace uncertainty with clarity.

Your numbers have a story. Let's make sure you can understand it.

🩺 Financial Vital Sign: Your Monthly Financial Check-Up

A healthy business doesn't happen by accident. It’s built through small, consistent habits—including checking in on your finances.

You don't need to spend hours going through every number each month. You just need to know what to look for.

📋 Your 30-Minute Financial Check-Up

Take a few minutes this month to review:

✔️ Your Profit & Loss
✔️ Your current cash balance
✔️ Accounts Receivable
✔️ Any major changes in expenses
✔️ One important question: “What story are my numbers telling me?”

The goal isn't to memorize every number on your financial statements.

It's to notice the trends.

Are expenses creeping up?
Is revenue changing?
Are customers taking longer to pay?
Is there enough cash available for what's coming next?

Just like regular health check-ups can help you catch potential problems early, regular financial check-ups can help you spot issues before they become bigger problems.

🩺 Healthy Practice Principle: Small financial check-ups can help prevent major financial emergencies.

When was the last time you gave your business finances a check-up?

🩺 Financial Vital Sign: Profit Margin

Revenue tells you how much money came in.

Profit tells you how much you actually kept.

And those two numbers can tell very different stories.

You can have your best sales month ever and still feel like you're not getting ahead if your expenses are growing just as fast.

That’s why profit deserves its own check-up. 💰

✅ This Week's Check-Up

Take a look at your Profit & Loss reports from the last three months.

Ask yourself:

➡️ Has your revenue increased?

➡️ Has your profit increased, too?

➡️ Or are your expenses growing just as quickly?

This is one of those places where the numbers can tell you something important about what's really happening in your business.

More revenue doesn't automatically mean a healthier business.

The goal isn't just to bring in more money. It's to build a business that keeps more of what it earns.

Think of it like your health: a higher heart rate doesn't necessarily mean a healthier heart. In the same way, higher revenue doesn't necessarily mean a healthier business.

🩺 Healthy Practice Principle:
Your numbers should help you make decisions — not just record history.

What does your P&L tell you about your business right now?

One thing I've learned from talking with business owners...

It's usually not the numbers that keep people up at night.

It's the surprises.

💸 The tax bill you weren't expecting.

🔧 The equipment that suddenly needs an expensive repair.

📉 The slower-than-normal month.

💰 Looking at your bank account and realizing cash is tighter than you thought.

No one can prevent every surprise in business.

But understanding your numbers can help you see many of them coming before they become emergencies.

That's one of the reasons I love bookkeeping.

It's about more than organizing transactions or reconciling accounts. It's about giving business owners the clarity to make confident decisions and sleep a little better at night.

The goal isn't perfect predictability.

It's fewer surprises and more peace of mind.

Have you ever had a business expense catch you completely off guard?

🩺 Financial Vital Sign: Cash Flow Forecast

Do you know how much money is in your business bank account today?

Most business owners do.

But do you know how much will be there 30 days from now?

That's where cash flow forecasting comes in.

It isn't about predicting the future perfectly—it's about being prepared for it.

Here's a simple exercise you can do today:

📅 Look at the next 30 days on your calendar.

Write down every major expense coming up:
• Payroll
• Rent
• Loan payments
• Subscriptions
• Insurance
• Taxes

Then compare that list to the income you expect to receive during that same time.

If you spot a gap, don't panic—you've found it early enough to make a plan.

Just like monitoring your blood pressure helps prevent bigger health issues, monitoring your cash flow helps prevent financial surprises.

Healthy businesses don't wait for problems to happen—they prepare for them.

When was the last time you looked ahead at your cash flow instead of just checking your bank balance?

People sometimes ask me what a bookkeeper actually does.

Yes, I reconcile accounts.
Yes, I categorize transactions.

But that's not what I enjoy most.

My favorite part is helping business owners understand what their numbers are trying to tell them.

Your financial reports aren't just paperwork to file away. They tell a story.

📈 What's improving?
📉 What's changing?
🔍 Where should you pay closer attention?

When you understand the story behind your numbers, you're able to make more confident decisions for your business.

That's why I love bookkeeping—because it's about so much more than keeping records. It's about giving business owners clarity.

Have you ever looked at your financial reports and thought, "I'm not really sure what I'm looking at?" You're definitely not alone.
