The U.S. Federal Income Tax System is the system used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to collect taxes from individuals and businesses to fund government activities such as defense, infrastructure, healthcare programs, and public services.
1️⃣ Progressive Tax System
The U.S. uses a progressive tax system, meaning:
➡️ Higher income levels are taxed at higher rates.
However, not all income is taxed at the highest rate. Income is divided into tax brackets, and each portion is taxed at a different rate.
Example Concept
If someone earns $100,000, different parts of that income fall into different tax brackets.
📊 Lower portions → taxed at lower rates
📊 Higher portions → taxed at higher rates
This ensures fairness by taxing ability to pay.
2️⃣ U.S. Federal Tax Brackets (Individuals)
Tax brackets depend on filing status, such as:
Single
Married Filing Jointly
Married Filing Separately
Head of Household
Example: 2026 Estimated Tax Brackets (Single Filers)
Income Range
Tax Rate
$0 – $11,600
10%
$11,601 – $47,150
12%
$47,151 – $100,525
22%
$100,526 – $191,950
24%
$191,951 – $243,725
32%
$243,726 – $609,350
35%
Over $609,350
37%
⚠️ Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate.
3️⃣ How the Progressive System Works
Example Calculation
Assume a taxpayer earns $60,000 taxable income (Single filer).
Tax calculation:
1️⃣ First $11,600 × 10% = $1,160
2️⃣ Next $35,550 × 12% = $4,266
3️⃣ Remaining $12,850 × 22% = $2,827
Total Federal Tax
$1,160
$4,266
$2,827
= $8,253 total tax
4️⃣ Marginal Tax Rate
The marginal tax rate is the tax rate applied to the last dollar of income earned.
In the previous example:
Income = $60,000
Highest bracket reached = 22%
Therefore:
➡️ Marginal Tax Rate = 22%
Meaning each additional dollar earned will be taxed at 22%.
5️⃣ Effective Tax Rate
The effective tax rate is the average rate actually paid on total income.
Formula
Using the previous example:
Total tax = $8,253
Income = $60,000
Effective tax rate:
✅ Effective Tax Rate ≈ 13.8%
6️⃣ Marginal vs Effective Tax Rate
Marginal Tax Rate
Effective Tax Rate
Meaning
Tax rate on last dollar earned
Average tax paid
Usually
Higher
Lower
Used for
Tax planning
Measuring tax burden
Example:
Marginal rate = 22%
Effective rate = 13.8%
7️⃣ Key Features of the U.S. Federal Tax System
✔ Progressive structure
✔ Based on taxable income
✔ Includes deductions and tax credits
✔ Filed annually with IRS Form 1040
✔ Tax year = January 1 – December 31
8️⃣ Basic Tax Calculation Formula
− Adjustments
= Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)
− Standard/Itemized Deduction
= Taxable Income
Apply tax brackets → calculate tax.
