Inflation indexing enhancements
• Many thresholds (deductions, credits, income brackets) will now be indexed for inflation so that taxpayers are less subject to “bracket creep.” Investopedia
• Effective: Starting tax year 2025 and forward.
• Why it matters: Better planning and more stability in tax outcomes over years

Energy/clean-energy tax credit phase-outs & modifications
• Several clean energy tax credits (e.g., residential clean energy, energy efficient home improvement credits) are terminated earlier than under prior rules, often after December 31, 2025. Duane Morris+1
• Effective: After Dec 31, 2025 for many credits.
• Why it matters: If you or clients are investing in renewables or energy improvements expecting credits, planning should be accelerated.

Mortgage interest deduction, personal & dependent exemption: other items
• The personal and dependent exemption (previously eliminated under TCJA temporarily) is now permanently repealed. proskauertaxtalks.com
• Mortgage interest deduction and other itemized deduction limitations are maintained in many respects and some of the “miscellaneous itemized deductions” remain eliminated. Grant Thornton
• Effective: Tax years beginning Jan 1, 2025 onward.
• Why it matters: For itemizers and for estate/gift planning, these changes maintain the landscape of deductions.

11/22/2025

State conformity & other state tax planning
• Although this summary is federal, states (including Ohio) will need to decide if and how they conform to federal changes. For example, some states may decouple or adopt different R&D deduction rules. RSM US
• Why it matters: Since you operate in Ohio (Westerville/Columbus area), you’ll want to evaluate how Ohio’s tax law changes or conformity decisions impact your businesses and clients.

Increased and permanent standard deduction
• For tax year 2025, the standard deduction is increased: e.g., for joint filers ~$26,000 (in one analysis) though some sources show ~$30,000. proskauertaxtalks.com+1
• The deduction amounts will be indexed for inflation going forward. Grant Thornton
• Effective: Tax years beginning Jan 1, 2025. Lexology+1
• Why it matters: If you take the standard deduction (rather than itemize), your taxable income decreases by a larger flat amount, improving tax outcomes.

11/18/2025

Additional deduction for seniors (age 65+)
• A new extra deduction of up to $6,000 for taxpayers age 65 or older — in addition to the standard deduction — is introduced. Bipartisan Policy Center+1
• Phase-outs apply: According to one summary, full benefit for MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) up to ~$75,000 (single) or ~$150,000 (married). Beyond that the benefit begins to phase out. Bipartisan Policy Center
• Taxpayers who itemize or standard‐deduct can claim this (it’s an additional deduction). Bipartisan Policy Center
• Effective: Tax years beginning Jan 1, 2025; appears scheduled to expire after 2028 in some forms. The Sun
• Why it matters: If you or a spouse are 65+, this extra deduction could significantly reduce taxable income.

11/16/2025

Permanent individual income-tax brackets
• The familiar seven marginal rates (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%) remain in place and are made permanent (i.e., will not revert to the higher pre-Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) schedule) for individuals, trusts and estates. Ropes & Gray+2U.S. Bank+2
• For 2025: taxable income thresholds slightly adjust for inflation. For example, the 24%→32% threshold for single filers is ~$197,300; for married filing jointly ~$394,600. U.S. Bank+1
• Why it matters: You can plan with certainty about marginal tax rates.
• Effective: Taxable years beginning Jan 1, 2025 onward. Ropes & Gray+1

11/15/2025

Increased Child Tax Credit (CTC)
• Starting tax year 2025, the Child Tax Credit is increased to $2,200 per qualifying child under age 17 and will be inflation-indexed. TurboTax+1
• Other eligibility rules remain (e.g., valid SSN for child, income phase-outs etc). TurboTax
• Effective: Tax year 2025 onward.
• Why it matters: If you have qualifying children (under 17), this increases the credit you may claim, lowering your tax liability.

11/13/2025

SALT deduction cap temporarily raised
• The cap on the deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) is increased from $10,000 to $40,000 (for single filers / married jointly) for tax years beginning in 2025, with modest annual increases and a scheduled expiration after a defined period. Investopedia+1
• Income phase‐out: For filers with higher modified AGI, the cap begins phasing out above ~$500,000 (or ~$250,000 for married filing separately) in one summary. Wikipedia
• Effective: Tax years beginning Jan 1, 2025 through Dec 31, 2029 (in many descriptions). Wikipedia+1
• Why it matters: Particularly relevant if you live in a high‐tax state and itemize; the larger cap allows more of your state/local tax to be deductible.
