⚠️ EARNING YOUR OWN INCOME? DON’T ASSUME SARS DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT IT.
If you earn income outside of a normal salary — from rental income, selling products, providing services or substantial interest income — you may have a responsibility to submit tax returns.
SARS has access to increasingly sophisticated financial information and can identify income and accounts that may not have been declared. And if returns were supposed to be submitted, penalties can quickly become expensive.
✅ Keep your SARS contact details up to date
✅ Keep proper records of your income and expenses
✅ Make sure all required returns are submitted
✅ Claim allowable tax expenses correctly
✅ Don’t ignore penalty notices or outstanding returns
Just because SARS hasn’t contacted you yet does not automatically mean you are exempt.
If you regularly receive income into your bank account and you’re unsure whether you should be filing, rather have your tax affairs checked now than deal with penalties later.
Be tax-minded. Stay informed. Stay in control.
