Accounting vs. Bookkeeping. What's the Difference?

Quick confession: We get this question all the time. And the answer matters for your business.

Bookkeeping is the foundation. It's the daily work of recording transactions, categorising expenses, reconciling accounts, keeping your financial house in order. Think of it as the day-to-day that keeps everything running smoothly.

Accounting is the strategy layer. It's where we take that clean data and turn it into insights. Tax planning, financial reporting, understanding your profit margins, spotting where you can grow faster. It's the "what does this actually mean for your business?" part.

And the truth, you need both.

Bookkeeping without accounting? You've got numbers but no clarity. Accounting without solid bookkeeping? You're working with shaky foundations.

At Third Space, we handle both and we make sure they work together to give you real-time insights and strategic growth support. Because we're not just here to tick compliance boxes. We're here to help you win.

Hired someone πŸ™? Bought a car πŸš—? Took out a loan 🏦?

Cool cool cool, and when were you going to tell us. πŸ‘€

These "small" life admin moments are actually kind of a big deal for your business. Not because we need to know everything (we're not that nosy), but because:

πŸ“‰ Missing them = surprises at tax time
πŸ“ˆ Telling us early = we can actually help you plan for it

So next time one of these happens, flick us a message. That's it.
Save this as your reminder list πŸ‘‡
βœ… Hired someone
βœ… Bought a car
βœ… Took out a business loan
βœ… Sold a property
βœ… Switched banks
βœ… Changed your address

None of these need a formal meeting. A text, an email, a "hey quick one" β€” whatever's easiest for you.
We'd rather know too early than find out too late. 🀍

P.S. If you're not sure whether something's "worth mentioning" just mention it. That's our job to figure out, not yours.

If you pay staff, this one is non-negotiable. πŸ“Œ

Single Touch Payroll finalisation is due 14 July 2026 and it applies to every business running payroll. No exceptions.

Miss it, and your staff can't lodge their own tax returns. Which means the calls, the chasing, the "why haven't I got my income statement yet" messages, all landing on you.

Here's what needs to happen before the deadline:
βœ… Reconcile payroll for the full financial year
βœ… Fix any errors in your STP data
βœ… Mark the finalisation declaration

Short timeframe. Big consequence if it's missed.
Don't leave it too late, book a call (link in bio)

08/07/2026

⏰ 5 days left to finalise STP before 14 July.

Most business owners think reporting payroll all year = done. It’s not.

βœ… STP finalisation = confirming your data is correct & complete
βœ… It’s what lets your employees lodge their tax return
❌ Miss it = ATO penalties + your team stuck waiting

Messy finances don't wait for you to catch up. They compound. You're making decisions blind. Losing money to tax. Burning out faster. Meanwhile, other businesses (our clients πŸ˜‰) are getting ahead because they know their numbers.

One of the most common situations we walk into with new clients is unresolved ATO debt.

The business owner knew it was there. They just didn't know what to do - so they did nothing.

The ATO has significant powers to recover what's owed, including Director Penalty Notices that extend personal liability directly to directors.

But they also have structured payment arrangements and a genuine preference to work with businesses that engage proactively.

If you're carrying ATO debt right now, reaching out to your accountant is always the right first move.
The sooner, the better.
