“Our books are reconciled” is a good start.

For a growing ecommerce business, the next question is more important:

Which products and sales channels are actually making money?

Clean books should help you see true product cost, platform and fulfillment fees, returns, advertising, inventory risk and the cash contribution from each channel.

And the numbers still need founder context. A weak historical margin may already be improving because pricing, suppliers or channel strategy changed.

The accountant can calculate the margin. The founder explains the business behind it.

Good accounting connects both.

A small accounting adjustment can expose a much bigger problem.

When an eCommerce company sells through Shopify, Stripe, PayPal, and multiple banks, the question isn’t just whether net income looks right.

Can you trace customer payments to deposits? Are refunds and customer prepayments classified correctly? Do the books support the tax return?

Not every small discrepancy needs a deep investigation. But if nobody can explain where the money went, the business needs more than a quick journal entry.

Good financial reporting means having numbers you can understand, use, and defend.

Who reconciles your payment processors all the way to the bank?

I’m a CPA, and I recently filed my own tax return using FreeTaxUSA and ChatGPT.

Both were useful. The software helped surface questions about ESPP stock basis, rental depreciation, and deductions. ChatGPT offered planning ideas worth considering.

But neither could know about expenses I forgot to record, reconstruct my S-corp shareholder basis from incomplete information, or make planning decisions before deadlines I'd already missed.

The lesson for business owners: technology is getting very good at preparing returns and answering questions. The harder part is knowing what information is missing—and what questions to ask before year-end.

That’s where a CPA who understands your business still adds value.
