Thinking about putting exempt on your W-4? Watch this first. Your Form W-4 tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck. Claiming exempt usually means no federal income tax will be withheld from your regular wages, so it is important to claim exempt only if you truly qualify. For 2026, you generally must have had no federal income tax liability for 2025 and expect to have no federal income tax liability for 2026. If too little tax is withheld during the year, you could owe money when you file your return, and you may also face an underpayment penalty. Your tax situation can change, so if you claimed exempt and later expect to owe federal income tax, submit a new W-4 to your employer. Do not guess on your W-4.
