IRS SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ

I want to share something important I am seeing this week.

Clients are receiving emails that look like they are from the IRS saying:
“You have a new secure document” or “Please sign” with a link to view it.

These emails can look VERY real.

Here is what you need to know:

The IRS does NOT typically contact you first by email, text, or social media.
Most official IRS communication starts by mail.

Safer option:
Instead of clicking any link in an email, go directly to your IRS account.

You can do this by:

* Going to IRS.gov
* Logging into or setting up your ID.me account
* Viewing your notices securely there

If there truly is a document, it will be in your IRS online account.

Best practice:

* Do NOT click links in unexpected emails
* Do NOT enter personal information from an email link
* Always go directly to IRS.gov yourself

If you are unsure, feel free to reach out to me before clicking anything.

Stay safe,
Sandy Dobson, CPA

Shred Day Reminder + Tax Record Tips

Nantahala Bank & Trust
Murphy Branch April 28th

If you are cleaning out files for shred day, here is a simple guide on what to keep and what you can safely shred:

How long should you keep tax returns?

* 3 years: Most tax returns and supporting documents
* 6 years: If you underreported income by more than 25%
* 7 years: Records related to bad debts or worthless securities
* Keep indefinitely: If you did not file a return or filed a fraudulent return

What should you keep longer?

* Property records (purchase, improvements, sale) – keep as long as you own the property plus 3 years after sale
* Investment records – keep until sold, plus 3 years
* Retirement account records – keep until all funds are withdrawn
* Business records – generally 3 to 7 years depending on the situation

What can you shred?

* Old bank statements (after 1 year, unless needed for taxes)
* Old utility bills
* Credit card statements (after verifying)
* Any document with personal information you no longer need

Shredding is a great way to protect your identity and clear out clutter safely.

If you are not sure about a specific document, it is always better to ask before shredding.
