4 Financial Metrics Every Small Business Owner Should Track Each Month 📆

If you only look at your bank balance, you’re missing the full picture. 📸

Every month, I encourage my clients to review four key areas of their business: 📋

✔ Cash Flow. Do you have enough money to cover your expenses?
✔ Payroll. Are labor costs staying within budget?
✔ Inventory. Is your inventory helping your business grow or tying up cash?
✔ Profit. Are you keeping enough of what you earn?

These numbers tell the real story of your business and help you make confident financial decisions before small issues become expensive problems.

Starting September Strong.
Why Monthly Bookkeeping Sets the Tone for Your Business

It’s the beginning of a new month, which means it’s time for one of my favorite bookkeeping tasks. Monthly reconciliations.😎 (I know I'm wierd)

This is when I compare your bank accounts, credit cards, and QuickBooks to make sure every transaction is accurate. It may not sound exciting, but it’s one of the most important steps in keeping your business financially healthy. 🩺

When your books are reconciled each month, your financial reports become reliable. You can review your Profit and Loss, understand your cash flow, catch mistakes early, and make confident business decisions instead of guessing.

Too many business owners wait until tax season to organize their books. By then, small issues have often become bigger and more expensive to fix.

Monthly bookkeeping keeps you in control all year long and gives you peace of mind every time you look at your numbers.

So here’s to a fresh month, a hot cup of coffee, and another opportunity to help business owners build stronger financial foundations.

If September is the month you’re ready to get your bookkeeping back on track, I’d love to help. Let’s start with a simple conversation and see where your books stand. Comment "chat" and I will share a link for a virtual coffee chat.

The Biggest Business Lesson I Learned After 17 Years. Boundaries Create Better Service

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after 17 years in business is this:

I used to think saying yes to every client request meant I was providing exceptional service.

I was wrong.

The best client experience doesn’t come from doing everything. It comes from doing the right things consistently.

Clear expectations, defined processes, and healthy boundaries allow me to provide accurate bookkeeping, timely financial reports, and dependable support. That’s what helps my clients make better business decisions and grow with confidence.

Sometimes, saying no to the wrong things is exactly what allows you to say yes to delivering your very best work.

Profit Isn’t Luck. 🍀...

It’s the Result of Good Bookkeeping and Smart Business Decisions 🗄️

When people see a successful business, they often assume the owner was lucky. They landed the right clients, charged the right prices, or happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The truth is, profit is rarely an accident. 📈

Behind every profitable business is a system for tracking income, managing expenses, reviewing financial reports, and making informed decisions. That’s where good bookkeeping makes all the difference. 🗃️

Bookkeeping isn’t just about keeping your records organized for tax season. It’s about understanding your business every month. When your books are accurate, you can see which services are making you money, identify unnecessary expenses, monitor your cash flow, and confidently plan for future growth. 📊

I’ve worked with business owners who thought they weren’t making enough money, only to discover through their Profit and Loss statement that small changes, like adjusting pricing, cutting unused subscriptions, or improving collections, significantly increased their profit. 📈

If you’re wondering what your numbers are trying to tell you, I’d be happy to help you understand them. Sometimes one conversation is all it takes to bring clarity to your business finances. 😎

Do I Need QuickBooks Online? Here’s When It’s Time to Upgrade From Spreadsheets 📁

One of the questions I hear most is, “Do I really need QuickBooks Online?” 🖥️

The answer depends on your business.
If you’re just starting out, a spreadsheet may work for a while...

But as your business grows, tracking income, expenses, invoices, and bank transactions manually becomes time-consuming and increases the chance of costly mistakes.

QuickBooks Online grows with your business.
It helps you organize your bookkeeping, generate accurate financial reports, monitor cash flow, and stay ready for tax season.
Instead of spending hours updating spreadsheets, you can spend more time serving your clients and growing your business. 🗄️

Not sure if you’ve outgrown your spreadsheet?

Let’s chat. 💬

I’d be happy to help you determine whether QuickBooks Online is the right next step for your business.

Tax Extension Deadlines. What Small Business Owners Need to Know About September 15 and October 15

If you filed a tax extension, don’t forget.
The extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay.
Two important tax deadlines are just around the corner.

📅 September 15
This is the filing deadline for many partnerships (Form 1065) and S corporations (Form 1120-S) that requested an extension.

📅 October 15
This is the extended filing deadline for most sole proprietors, single-member LLCs, and individual tax returns (Form 1040) that filed an extension.

If your bookkeeping isn’t up to date, these deadlines can arrive faster than you think.
Accurate bookkeeping, reconciled accounts, and organized financial reports make tax preparation much smoother and help your tax professional file an accurate return.

If you’re still getting your books ready for your tax preparer, now is the perfect time to make sure everything is accurate before these important deadlines arrive.

If you need support guidance or simply need to delegate it write in the comment "Deadline" for me to send you a link to schedule a complimentary session.

5 Monthly Tasks Every Small Business Owner Should Complete

As August comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to wrap up your monthly bookkeeping before September begins. Spending just a little time on your finances now can save hours of stress during tax season and help you make smarter business decisions.

Here’s my August Bookkeeping Checklist:

✅ Reconcile your bank accounts.
✅ Send any outstanding invoices.
✅ Review your Profit & Loss (P&L) statement.
✅ Set aside money for taxes.
✅ Pay yourself if it’s part of your business plan.

These five simple habits help keep your QuickBooks, financial reports, and cash flow accurate all year long. The goal isn’t just clean books. It’s knowing exactly where your business stands so you can plan with confidence instead of guessing.

What’s the one bookkeeping task you always complete first at month-end? Let me know in the comments!

If you’re feeling behind, don’t worry. A fresh month is the perfect time to get your bookkeeping back on track. I’d be happy to help.
