Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is no longer on the horizon — it arrived in April.
If you're self-employed or a landlord with qualifying income over £50,000, you're now required to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. The first one is due by 7 August — and yes, that's this year, not a rehearsal.
From April 2027 the threshold drops to £30,000, so if you're below the line today, you may not be for long.
The good news: with the right software set up properly, quarterly updates largely take care of themselves. The set-up is the part worth getting right — and it's exactly what we do all day.

Not sure whether you're in scope, or which software suits you? Ask — before 7 August, ideally. Crossley & Davis, Bolton.

“Should I go limited?” — the question we're asked most, usually over a coffee that goes cold.
The honest answer: it depends on your numbers, your risk and your plans — not on what worked for someone else.
Sole trader: simple, low admin, but you and the business are legally the same thing, and profits are taxed as your income.
Limited company: a separate legal entity, limited liability, more credibility with some customers and lenders — and more admin, filings and responsibilities to go with it.
The tipping point is different for everyone. Profit level, how much you reinvest, payroll plans and pensions all move it.
Thinking of switching — or just starting? Bring us your numbers and we'll show you both versions side by side, in plain English.

Two weeks today, HMRC's quietest deadline arrives.
If your last self-assessment bill was more than £1,000, your second payment on account for 2025/26 is due on 31 July. There's no countdown on TV for this one — just interest accruing quietly from 1 August if it's missed.
Worth knowing:
– It's an advance payment towards this year's bill, based on last year's figures.
– If your income has dropped since then, you can apply to reduce it.
– Reduce it too far, though, and HMRC charges interest on the difference — so it pays to get the sums right.
If you're not sure your payments on account reflect reality, get in touch this week — checking now is considerably cheaper than correcting later.
