⛳ Some of our first business lessons came from selling golf balls...that we found in a ditch.

Growing up, there were three of us brothers.

Every summer, we'd spend hours exploring the muddy irrigation ditch behind our family's property. On the other side of a wheat field was a golf course, and we figured out pretty quickly that golfers were losing a lot of golf balls in those ditches.

So we'd dig them out of the mud, haul them home in buckets, wash them, and scrub each one with old toothbrushes until they looked almost new.

When we had enough, we'd load them into our little red wagon, pull it to the road, and put up a hand-painted sign:

⛳ Golf Balls – 10¢

Looking back, we probably sold quite a few of those golf balls back to the same golfers who had lost them. 😄

Our cash register? Our dad's old toolbox.

At the time, we thought we were just making a little spending money.

Looking back, we were learning lessons that have stayed with us ever since:

✔️ Opportunity is often where others don't look.
✔️ Hard work creates value.
✔️ Take pride in what you do.
✔️ Understanding your numbers matters.

Today, two of those three brothers own Quist & Quist CPAs.

Instead of selling golf balls from a red wagon, we help business owners understand their numbers, reduce taxes, improve cash flow, and build stronger businesses.

The businesses are bigger.

The numbers are bigger.

But the fundamentals haven't changed.

Every year, we sit down with business owners and review prior-year tax returns.

Sometimes everything looks great.

But often, we find opportunities that were never identified.

Things like:
✅ Better entity structure choices
✅ Retirement contribution strategies
✅ More tax-efficient owner compensation
✅ Health insurance planning opportunities
✅ Overlooked tax credits
✅ Year-end planning that could reduce next year’s tax bill

None of these are “complicated” strategies.

They just require planning before December 31—not after April 15.

If there’s nothing to improve, we’ll tell you.
If there is, we’ll explain it clearly so you can decide what makes sense.

💬 Have you ever had your tax return reviewed for planning opportunities—not just preparation?

If not, let’s talk.

🚀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆.

Many of us saw the recent news about Micron following its strong earnings report and continued momentum from the AI boom (link to the article in the comments). For many local employees, that success showed up as a meaningful increase in their net worth through stock compensation.

It's also been incredible to watch Micron's stock run, climbing well over 800% in roughly the past year as demand for AI infrastructure and high-bandwidth memory has surged. Seeing a Treasure Valley company become one of the biggest winners of the AI revolution is something our community can be proud of.

At Quist & Quist CPAs, we're proud to work with many Micron employees right here in the Treasure Valley.

Over the years, we've helped employees navigate the tax complexities that often come with equity compensation, including:

📈 RSUs (Restricted Stock Units)
💼 ESPPs (Employee Stock Purchase Plans)
💰 Stock sales & capital gains planning
📊 Tax projections to help avoid surprises

Stock compensation can be an incredible wealth-building tool—but it also comes with tax rules that aren't always intuitive. Timing of sales, ESPP qualifying vs. disqualifying dispositions, RSU withholding, and estimated tax payments can all have a major impact on taxes owed.

Our goal is simple: help employees understand their stock compensation, make informed decisions, and reduce unnecessary taxes.

Congratulations to Micron and to the thousands of local employees who helped make this success possible. We're grateful to have such an innovative company in our community.

🥂 Cheers to continued success for Micron, its employees, and the Treasure Valley!

Before you disagree...

Think about this:
We've seen businesses increase revenue by 20%, 30%, even 50% and still struggle with cash flow.

Why? 🤔
Because more sales don't automatically mean more profit.
In fact, growth can create more problems when you don't know your numbers.

🚧 You hire before you can afford it.
📉 Margins quietly shrink.
💸 Cash gets tighter even though revenue is growing.
📬 Tax surprises show up when you least expect them.
⏰ You spend more time reacting and less time planning.

The businesses that consistently win aren't always the ones with the highest revenue.

They're the ones that understand:

✅ Which services make the most money
✅ Which customers are the most profitable
✅ Where expenses are creeping up
✅ How much cash they'll need in the next 30-90 days
✅ What their financial reports are actually telling them

💰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆

Many people use the terms rich and wealthy interchangeably, but they're actually very different.

Being 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 is often about income. A person can earn a high salary, drive a nice car, and live in a beautiful home, yet still feel financial pressure month after month.

Being 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 is about ownership and freedom. It's having investments, businesses, retirement accounts, and assets that continue working for you whether you're working or not.

One of the biggest patterns we see is people focusing solely on increasing income while neglecting to build assets. Income pays the bills, but assets create long-term financial independence.

The good news? Wealth is rarely built overnight. It's usually the result of consistent investing, thoughtful planning, and small financial decisions that compound over time.

🎯 The goal isn't just to earn more.
The goal is to build something that lasts.

👇 Which do you think plays a bigger role in building wealth?
• Earning more money
• Managing the money you already earn better
• A combination of both

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

📊 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Revenue matters, but the right 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀) provide a much clearer picture of the overall health of a business.

Here are 𝟱 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀 every business owner should review regularly:

💰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻
Are rising costs affecting profitability?
This KPI helps measure how efficiently your business delivers its product or service.
For example, if sales stay the same but material or labor costs increase, your gross profit margin will shrink.

📈 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻
How much of your revenue are you actually keeping?
Strong sales do not always mean strong profits.
A business generating 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 $𝟭𝗠 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 but only retaining 𝟯% 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 may have operational or spending issues to address.

🧾 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴
Are unpaid invoices slowing down cash flow?
Many profitable businesses still struggle financially because customers are paying too slowly.
If a large portion of receivables are over 𝟲𝟬 𝗼𝗿 𝟵𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 old, it may be time to tighten collections procedures.

👥 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲
Is payroll staying in line with revenue growth?
For many businesses, payroll is the largest expense.
If revenue increases by 𝟱% but payroll increases by 𝟮𝟬%, margins can quickly begin to tighten.

💵 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄 - Cash is King at the end of the Day!
Can the business comfortably support operations and future growth?
Cash flow is what allows businesses to hire, invest, and navigate slower periods with confidence.
A company may look profitable on paper while still struggling if cash is tied up in inventory or unpaid invoices.

✅ Businesses that consistently track KPIs are often better positioned to:
• Improve profitability
• Manage growth
• Reduce surprises
• Make more confident decisions

❓What KPI do you pay the closest attention to in your business?
Are there any other KPIs you’ve found especially valuable in helping your business grow or operate more efficiently?

05/11/2026

The 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿 who spends 𝟮𝟬 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 a month on data entry and accounting tasks. ⏳

It’s the hidden bottleneck in most successful businesses that can become a timesuck, or worse, a massive liability for you if handled improperly.

You built this company to lead, to innovate, and to grow. You didn’t build it to spend your nights reconciling bank statements or sweating over payroll tax withholdings. But as the business scales, the back-office tasks scale with it—usually by eating into your most valuable asset: your time.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽
When the paperwork gets heavy, the first instinct often is to hire a part-time bookkeeper. But that often just trades one problem for another:

- You’re now responsible for their base pay, payroll taxes, time-off, equipment, software subscriptions, and space.
- You have to spend your own time recruiting and training them. And heaven forbid they quit, and you have to do it all over again.
- You’re still stuck in a management loop—leaving you to either review every single line item or blindly trust that no mistakes are being made.

𝗔 𝗖𝗣𝗔-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲
At 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘀𝘁 & 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗣𝗔𝘀, we believe a business owner's focus belongs on the vision and actual operations of the business, not the ledger. We aren't just "running numbers"—we are licensed CPAs bringing executive-level expertise to your daily operations.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀

We provide expert analysis and reporting tailored specifically to the metrics that drive your business, giving you the clarity you need to make informed decisions. This is what transforms bookkeeping from an annoying task to a powerful tool that helps direct your management decisions.

𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀-𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹
We work with you to ensure you and your team are paid on time, every time. Beyond the paycheck, we handle the high-stakes side of payroll: ensuring every tax filing and payment is executed correctly and remains in full compliance. No more stressing over filing the various federal and state forms and making sure those payments are being made on time.

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲
You shouldn't have to manage your accountant; your accountant should be managing your peace of mind. Get the expertise of a full-scale accounting department without the overhead or the training manual.
